Why We Stock Only Original Editions
Reprints have their place — but for collectors, students, and devotees, the original edition carries something a facsimile never can.
At India Rare we focus relentlessly on originals — first editions, sealed runs from the publisher, and out-of-print printings that no longer reach mainstream channels. Why does it matter?
Provenance
An original edition is a document of its time. The paper stock, the typesetting, the publisher's imprint — they tell you when and where a work entered the world. A reprint compresses that history.
Translation integrity
Many Indian classics have been re-translated repeatedly. The first English edition of a Sanskrit work often carries notes from the translator that disappear in later editions. We preserve those choices, even when they're imperfect.
Investment
Collectors and libraries pay for originals because their value compounds. A sealed first-edition of an Indian classic from a respected press today will be more valuable in a decade — both monetarily and as a cultural artefact.
Every listing on India Rare explicitly states the edition, year, and publisher so you can verify before you buy.
