🕯️ Why Is Pitru Paksha Considered the Most Sacred Time to Honour Ancestors?
During the highly auspicious Pitru Paksha, offer heartfelt prayers to your ancestors and participate in the 15-day Pitru Shanti rituals being performed in the sacred city of Kashi, the eternal land of liberation. According to Hindu tradition, Shraddha, Tarpan and prayers performed during this period are dedicated to remembering and honouring departed ancestors.
🔱 Could Unexplained Obstacles Be Linked to Pitru Dosha?
According to traditional Hindu beliefs, such challenges may sometimes be associated with Pitru Dosha or unfulfilled ancestral obligations. This is why Pitru Paksha is regarded as an important period to honour departed ancestors. Through Shraddha and Tarpan, devotees express gratitude, seek ancestral peace and pray for their blessings.
The Garuda Purana describes the significance of offerings made to ancestors and explains that offerings are associated with the departed through their name, gotra and mantras, highlighting the traditional importance of performing these rituals with a proper Sankalp.
🌕 Why Does Pitru Paksha Begin After Purnima?
Beginning with Shukla Paksha Purnima, a spiritually significant period commences, followed by the 15-day Pitru Paksha, dedicated to remembering ancestors through Shraddha, Tarpan and Pitru Shanti rituals.
According to traditional belief, this period is especially favourable for ancestral offerings, as descendants perform rituals and prayers seeking the peace and satisfaction of their Pitrs. The period concludes with Sarva Pitru Amavasya, which is dedicated to remembering ancestors whose specific Shraddha date may not be known.
🪔 What Does the Story of Karna Teach Us About Pitru Paksha?
The significance of Pitru Paksha is beautifully illustrated through the traditional story of the great donor Karna from the Mahabharata tradition.
After his death, when Karna reached heaven, he was offered gold and precious gems instead of food. He was told that although he had generously donated wealth throughout his life, he had not offered food or water to his ancestors. Karna was then granted fifteen days to return to Earth, during which he performed Shraddha and Tarpan for his ancestors.
This traditional story is associated with the observance of Pitru Paksha and highlights an important message: honouring ancestors is not only about material giving, but also about remembering them with gratitude and devotion.
🕉️ Why Is Kashi Chosen for These 15 Days of Pitru Shanti Puja?
Kashi is revered as one of Hinduism's most sacred pilgrimage cities and is traditionally associated with liberation. Performing ancestral prayers here adds a deeply spiritual setting to the 15-day observance.
On this auspicious occasion, a 15-Day Daily Pitru Dosha Shanti Mahapuja will be performed in Kashi. On the first day, learned priests will begin the rituals by taking a Sankalp in your name and Gotra. Thereafter, Pitru Shanti rituals will be performed every day throughout the fifteen-day period according to Vedic traditions.
The importance of Shraddha and ancestral offerings is also described in the Garuda Purana, which gives detailed guidance on offerings made to the Pitrus and the traditional process of honouring them.
🙏 What Happens on the Final Day of Pitru Paksha?
On the final day, Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the observances will conclude with the prescribed Visarjan rituals. This completes the Sankalp connected with the full Pitru Paksha period. From the beginning of the observance to its conclusion, the 15-day ritual offers devotees an opportunity to remember their ancestors, express gratitude and pray for their peace and blessings.
